History of George "Culley"
George Culley (1735-1813) was an influential English agriculturist known for his innovative farming techniques. He, along with his brother Matthew, moved to Northumberland in 1767 and settled at Fenton, near Wooler.
The Culley brothers were pioneers in agricultural improvements, particularly in sheep and cattle breeding. They adopted and further developed the methods of their mentor, Robert Bakewell, focusing on selective breeding to enhance livestock quality. Their farm at Fenton became a model of modern agricultural practices, attracting visitors from far and wide. The Culleys were instrumental in introducing advanced techniques such as crop rotation and drainage improvements to the region.
George Culley's contributions to agriculture were widely recognized, and he published several works on the subject, often in collaboration with John Bailey
